The Kingdom of Lesotho
March 2005 - Horse trek into Africa's highlands
Lesotho is that tiny country completely surrounded by South Africa. The white owner of the Malealea Lodge, where we stayed a night, said that only six white people remain in Lesotho who were actually born here. All the rest left when the British colonial period ended in 1966. Lesotho is the only country in the world to sit entirely above 1000 meters, a kingdom in the sky. We went horse trekking in the unspoiled highlands, where we stayed in huts with the Basotho people, worth the uncomfortable bus rides to get there! That's public transportation in Africa. We're not here for comfort. We can get that at home. We're here to see the world and her people. Ahhh... Lesotho. Great! I wish to stress just how much we loved this little country, a real paradise by African standards. Get here if you can, and go horse trekking.
